How REM Changes with the Browser Font Size

Browsers such as Chrome let readers pick a default font size. REM follows that choice, which is why it is the accessible unit for text.

Browser font size Root size 1rem 1.5rem 2rem
Very small9px9px13.5px18px
Small12px12px18px24px
Medium (default)16px16px24px32px

Page zoom (Ctrl + / Ctrl −) scales everything, px included. The font-size setting above only scales rem and em.

How to Convert REM to PX

px = rem × root font size

Example: 1.25 rem × 16 = 20 px. If your stylesheet sets html { font-size: 62.5%; }, the root is 10 px and 1.25 rem = 12.5 px.
